Everyone experiences life from inside a body and everyone also knows how it feels to be judged based on appearance. Envision a world in which everyone’s appearance, abilities, gender, orientation, culture, ethnicity are valued “as-is.” Anya’s unique journey as a Jewish woman standing up to post 9/11 Islamophobia and xenophobia demonstrates how we can truly bridge cultural barriers and reevaluate current media messages while reclaiming our own worth and esteem.
Anya Cordell, recipient of the 2010 Spirit of Anne Frank Award, was a beauty-obsessed teen who grew into a powerful spokesperson against intolerance and “appearance-ism” (appearance-based judging). She founded the Campaign for Collateral Compassion to raise awareness of the post 9/11 backlash against Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, and others; and is the author of RACE: An Open & Shut Case, which unravels traditional presumptions of what we call race.
