TSA at Wheaton Chamber of Commerce Awards

gamon awards

On February 24, representatives of the Theosophical Society in America attended the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce 2010 Gamon Awards. TSA President Betty Bland has encouraged the Society to be more involved in the Wheaton Community. In support of this effort, David Bland has played an active role in the Wheaton Chamber by chairing committees and now serving as President. Annually, the Chamber recognizes outstanding community-minded businesses and citizens at the Gamon Awards. This year Chris Bolger, Director of Technology and Dan Noga, Membership Coordinator, were selected for the George Handy Award, "Top Thirty Under Thirty", for up-and-coming leaders under thirty years of age. We are very proud of this recognition.

We are very excited to report the completion of the kitchen and dining hall renovation project. The new kitchen design incorporates commercial grade stainless steel shelving, work tables, a modern 12 burner stove, and a new exhaust fan hood. Read More

  MESSAGE FROM TSA PRESIDENT

Dear Member-at-large,

This is addressed especially to you as a member who does not have a group affiliation. I realize that this may be by choice but it can also be due to circumstance. Since your contact with other members is probably limited, you may not have had the opportunity to participate in our recent members' survey. So I am asking you to consider completing a simple questionnaire to help us discern what your particular needs are and how we might better serve you.  Read More

  MEMBERSHIP NEWS

THE GOOD NEWS AND THE BAD NEWS

First the bad news: The National Board of Directors has determined that it is necessary to raise annual membership dues to $60. As the economy changes, from time to time this has to be done, but it is never an easy decision. We hope that although this is a small increase (just a little over a dollar per month more), it will help in some small way to offset some expenses we incur in trying to serve you better.

Now the good news: You have an extended opportunity to participate in the Lifetime Membership Endowment fund at the same rate of $1,100 until July 1, 2009. This can be paid as a tax deductible one time contribution or on a convenient payment plan.  After this date the rate will be $1,500.

The further good news is that you can combine this opportunity for lifetime membership with the chance to support an organization you believe in, to help it fulfill its mission in making the Theosophical world view better known and encouraging people to explore spiritual self-transformation.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP
Last chance for Life Membership at $1100 - now until July 2009!!!

Have you considered Life Membership in The Theosophical Society?

What does it mean to be a Life Member?
As a Life Member, you are helping to establish a permanent Membership Endowment Fund for the long-term support of Theosophy. The Theosophical Investment Trust invests your donation, and the income replaces your national dues during your lifetime.

What are the benefits?
Life Members receive all the same benefits as annual members, without the bother of renewal notices. You will be protected from future increases in dues. Membership will be continuous, ensuring that you are eligible to vote in all national and international elections. You will receive a special certificate for framing and an elegant laminated Life Member card.

What is the cost?
The Life Membership donation is currently $1100, but will be raised to $1500 on July 1, 2009. The Life Membership donation is tax-deductible.

AUDITORIUM RENOVATION

bradden bkOn December 15th, 2008 the staff at Olcott pitched in to ready the auditorium so that renovation work could begin. The staff helped remove the chairs, electronic equipment, speakers, and curtains from the main auditorium and art gallery. They proceeded to cut up and remove the old carpeting from both spaces as well as the carpeting covering the wooden stage. A separate crew brought out the sledgehammers and made short work of the stage. Crews were kept busy carrying garbage cans full of debris from the auditorium to the elevator, to 1st floor lobby, while the last crew carried the cans out into the frigid cold emptying them into a large dumpster parked in the rear of the building.   WORLD PEACE

MEDITATION FOR WORLD PEACE
December 31, 2008

bradden bk Meditation for world peace is a yearly event in which participants use their concentrated thought power to help generate energy for peace and healing. Before sunrise, 30 dedicated people gathered at the National Headquarters at Olcott to be a part of the global meditation. This wave of peaceful thought travels around the world as it coincides with group meditations across the globe! By releasing light, love, and spiritual energy into the world, we hope to help heal the sense of separation between human beings.
This year, in addition to the holiday greenery, the library was decorated with sections of the original Peace Ribbon . Some of the panels were made right here at the Theosophical Society while other segments were created by children and adults from around the world. The Peace Ribbon was displayed in downtown Chicago and wound through Grant Park during the 1993 Parliament of the World's Religions. After meditation, the group enjoyed delicious breakfast treats and lively conversation with good company in the Olcott dinning room.

Creative Evolution: A Quantum Resolution between Darwinism and Intelligent Design

by Amit Goswami

This is a special pre-release opportunity available in August '08 for E-Newsletter readers only. To order call 630-668-1571, ext. 347.

Dr. Goswami's central theme is that pure consciousness, not matter, is the primary force in the universe. This view differs radically from mainstream theories that see evolution as the result of simple physical reactions. It also differs from intelligent-design arguments that posit a clockmaker God who fabricated the universe. Biology, Dr. Goswami says, must come to terms with feeling, meaning, and the purposefulness of life. The key is the idea of creativity in biological development, which reconciles evolution with intelligent design by a purposive designer.

Blavatsky's Tibet: Lhasa, Everest, and Beyond!

Dear Friends,

I have an important update of information about the next pilgrimage to Tibet.
TIBET IS OPEN! This information comes from our friend, Pawan Tuladhar, in Kathmandu, Nepal. As of June 26, 2008, the areas that our Tibet Pilgrimage will explore on October 03 - 21 are confirmed open to tourists.
August 15 is the registration cutoff date for this special pilgrimage sponsored by the Theosophical Society, Blavatsky's Tibet: Lhasa, Everest, and Beyond. This cutoff is necessary to ensure that there is plenty of time for everyone to procure Visas.

MOMENT OF PEACE PROJECT

Chicago, IL- The Foundation of Peace Community Project requests your participation in "The Moment of Peace Project" scheduled for 08/08/08 at 08:08 a.m.
"What if we could stop all conflict in the world for just one moment," asked the event organizer. "Would that moment have the possibility to lead to another moment of no conflict - of peace? I believe it can. Peace is not something that we need to fight for. Peace is something we need to create together."
It's easy and everyone can do it. Just observe a moment of peace on 08/08/08 at 08:08 a.m. in your time zone - wherever you are - with whomever you are with. On 08/08/08 at 8:08 am, pray, meditate, or just think of PEACE of Mind, PEACE in the family, PEACE in the community, PEACE in the World. Please pass this information along.
