One Woman's True-life Journey to the Heart of the Grail
by Patrice Chaplin
A captivating tale of author and playwright Patrice Chaplan's early years spent in a mysterious town in Spain and the secrets she uncovers as she returns later throughout the course of her life. Her story follows the intriguing villagers of Girona, many of whom, she discovers, belong to a secret society formed to protect the legacy of Abbé Saunière of Rennes-le-Château fame. The mysteries surrounding him are at the very heart of the modern Grail phenomenon. Along the way she tells of her love affair with the town's favorite son and how their lives become dangerously entangled in the secrets buried in this beautiful, ancient city.

Action Group Forming
The Theosophical Order of Service (TOS) invites you to join in a discussion of ways to increase service opportunities for groups and individuals. Our goal is to develop a TOS action group that can identify a few service-oriented projects, and then take the necessary action to complete the tasks. All who desire to be actively involved in service work may attend these monthly meetings. Our first meeting is scheduled for:
Monday, September 8, 2008, 6:30-7:30 p.m. Theosophical Society in America 1926 North Main St Wheaton, IL 60187
Realizing the value and limit of each person's time, we encourage volunteers to get involved at their own pace in whichever project appeals to them most. If you are already involved in a project, please share it with us. New ideas and suggestions are always welcome. Some suggestions already received include:
- Helping the elderly with yard work, shopping, and transportation to healthcare appointments
-
Volunteering at established homeless center
-
Volunteering at animal shelter
-
Initiating new projects to raise public awareness for a cleaner environment
We hope that you will consider becoming a part of this growing network of concerned service-oriented individuals. We look forward to your participation. For more information, please contact Jeanne Proulx at Jproulx3366@yahoo.com or 630-668-1571 ext. 306 or visit www.theoservice.org.

SUMMER NATIONAL GATHERING

From the President's Diary The end of July brought Board members and Society members from around the country to the Summer National Gathering. At Friday evening's opening night ceremonies, guests were welcomed and greetings were shared from those not able to attend. Later we enjoyed a violin recital by the gifted Carmelo de Los Santos. On Saturday, we co-hosted an off-campus, Pre-Parliament event "Hearing Each Other, Healing the Earth," with the Council for the Parliament of World's Religions. The busy weekend included activity reports from various departments, a talk by Robert Ellwood, "Theosophy and World Religions," and a multi-media presentation on the life of Albert Schweitzer. I presented John Algeo's talk on the Seven Rays and Ann Ford, Tim Boyd, and Robert Ellwood each gave a short talk on a different world religion. Meditation programs, discussion groups, and a panel discussion rounded out our Theosophical programs. Thank you to all who visited, participated, and made this 123rd Summer National Gathering possible.

YOUR NEW AUDITORIUM
As a result of your generous support to our Capital Funds
Campaign (CFC), the auditorium is now completely refurbished. Its crowning glory will be the
beautiful door to be installed by mid-April. The seating has been increased by
one third and arranged in the round so the speaker is much closer to the
audience. The new sound and recording system balances and improves the sound
quality for both live audiences and recorded media.
When we first began our campaign to raise funds for our needed
capital improvements, our needs were so great that many were afraid our goal
was too high. With high hopes and the wonderful support of our members, we
have been able to replace our 25 year old phone system, install a smoke and fire
alarm system in the Rogers Building that connects directly to the fire department,
and, now, complete the auditorium renovation.
Our next priority, which has a major impact on our hosting public functions, is to upgrade the kitchen and dining
areas.
Your support is still needed, so if you haven't pledged,
please consider a monthly pledge of $10, $20, $50 or whatever you feel you can afford.
We are making your National Center a place of beauty in order to serve you
better as well as to be more welcoming to the public. See more pictures

APRIL 23 to 25, 2010
Our national conference provides a great opportunity to explore our religious wounds from many per- spectives. Although this conference cannot promise to "fix it," it
is designed to help you deepen your understanding and connect more
authentically to your spirituality.
We are privileged to feature as our keynote speaker Bishop John Shelby Spong, author of such best-selling works as Why Christianity Must Change or Die, Rescuing the Bible from Fundamentalism, and most recently, Eternal Life.
Bishop Spong will discuss his personal journey through several crises of faith, which have led to some radical and healing insights. He will be
joined by a number of other pivotal thinkers in the field, such as
Christopher Bamford, senior editor of Parabola; spiritual counselor Maurice Proulx; Richard Smoley, author of Inner Christianity; and others.

On October 14th, 2009, our staff planted 10 new
trees on the grounds of the national center. Funding for the trees was provided
by donations received from our members following the
devastating tornado damage in August 2007. At that time, we lost over 60 trees
with countless others damaged.
Thanks to the very generous support of many of our members,
we were able to plant sixteen trees in 2008, ten trees in 2009 and at least ten
more are planned for 2010. Well done!
Anyone interested in supporting this project, please donate online and select Tree Replacement or contact Mark Roemmich at mroemmich@theosophical.org. Thanks again to all of the members who have responded to
our needs!

Theosophy
is this direct knowledge of God . . . it teaches in a quite clear and
definite way the methods of reaching firsthand knowledge by unfolding
the spiritual consciousness, and by evolving the organs through which
that consciousness can function on our earth.
