Clara Codd (1876–1971) was a beloved lecturer and spiritual teacher of the modern Theosophical movement. An English Theosophist, writer, educator, and advocate for women's rights, she devoted nearly seventy years to sharing the wisdom of Theosophy around the world. She served as General Secretary of both the Australian and South African Sections of the Theosophical Society (Adyar) and traveled extensively across five continents, inspiring countless seekers through her lectures, writings, and personal correspondence. Her autobiography, So Rich a Life, beautifully captures the spirit of a life devoted to truth, service, and the spiritual path.
For more than twenty years, Clara Codd maintained ongoing correspondence with students of Theosophy around the world. She wrote 137 bi-monthly letters that were eagerly awaited by readers on five continents. More than historical documents, these letters are intimate conversations with a mature spiritual traveler, filled with practical wisdom, encouragement, and profound Theosophical insight.
Clara did not write for the sake of intellectual study alone. As she explained in her final letter, she encouraged her readers to "learn mostly from life itself with all its events and problems." Her aim was to help seekers discover the Divine within themselves and learn from the experiences of everyday life.
In this four-week class, we will explore a selection of Clara Codd's letters, uncovering the Theosophical principles woven through her reflections and considering how they illuminate our own spiritual journey today. Each class will focus on selected teachings and exercises to practice in our relationships, our challenges, and our path of inner awakening.
