TS_Centennial_img_10Ten decades ago, on August 10, 1911, a group of twelve students and spiritual aspirants received a charter from the national headquarters creating this Portland branch of the Theosophical Society in America. For one hundred years, membership waxed and waned, and locations changed until the present building was purchased in 1953, but through it all, the Portland branch flourished and endured.

Auspiciously, our existence was presaged as early as 1897 when Annie Besant and also Countess Wachtmeister each visited Portland. In 1911, C. Jinarajadasa gave five lectures here. Many other luminaries are part of Portland’s history, teaching and lecturing, from early International President George Arundale to Manly Palmer Hall. This year of 2011, as we proudly celebrate our centennial, we invite you to join us for some special events.

The Masters Speak: Teachings of Sri Madhava Ashish

A Nine Week Course Sept. 21 - Nov. 9, 2011
With Sy Ginsburg

Sy visited Sri Madhava Ashish every year for nineteen years at Mirtola, an ashram with deep theosophical roots in the Indian Himalayas. In this course Sy presents the teachings of Ashish and his guru, Sri Krishna Prem, based upon their seven requirements for direct self-initiation. These requirements include self-remembering, meditation in silence, dream work, and intentional effort. Mirtola was founded in 1930 by Gyanendra Chakravarti and his wife Monica, who became the first Mirtola guru. The Chakravartis were close disciples of Annie Besant, and Dr. Chakravarti accompanied her to the first Parliament of Religions at Chicago in 1893. Sy Ginsburg is past president of the Theosophical Society in Miami & South Florida.

Life and Teachings of Theosophical Leaders

The term "Theosophy" comes from the Greek theosophia, which is composed of two words: theos ("god," "gods," or "divine") and sophia ("wisdom"). Theosophia, therefore, may be translated as the "wisdom of the gods," "wisdom in things divine," or "divine wisdom."

Zelma ColendichI record history in my soul searching paintings of stories told and untold, events seen and unseen through mystic realms of elementals, singing the music of color and sound vibrating into our world.

In 1970, I left my beloved San Francisco, to rekindle my theosophical studies with The Temple of the People in Halcyon California on the Central Coast.  I paint to express my spiritual self and to share the living memories of previous temple priests that once studied, worked and lived with the founding temple sisters and brothers. To capture on canvas the soul and ambiance of the village of Halcyon with its peculiar people, who continually work to build this theosophical community, is the source of endless inspiration that has become a life-long quest of mine. Together my paintings speak stories of what was, what is and what will come to be.  Before I knew it, my studio was filled with paintings of the William Quan Judge Library, Blue Star Memorial Temple, University Center, Post Office, Halcyon Store, cemetery, corals and old barns.  For over a hundred years temple builders have nourished the grounds with herbs and flowers around little cottages or historic houses and studios that have now become the Secret Gardens.  Walk on trails through the Eucalyptus Grove or stroll along the perimeter of Halcyon by following the lanes near the oaks and cypress walls.  Halcyon is a painting as the backdrop to a stage of actors playing out life in a surreal setting on etheric planes of down to earth living.  My paintings are a loving tribute to all true theosophists everywhere, both seen and unseen, who are holding the keynote point of humanities evolution in devotion to the work of H.P. Blavatsky.
