Beginning Astrology: The Symbolic Language of the Heavens

IBeginning Astrology The Symbolic Language of the Heavens Dave Gunning 4.23n this four-week class, participants have fun identifying and understanding the basic elements of a birth chart. Together, we will look at what each of the signs, houses, planets, and aspects mean, and by their symbols identify them on the horoscope wheel.

Registration students will need to provide their birth information so the instructor can prepare charts ahead of time and have them available by the evening of the first class. Participants will refer to their personal charts as the class proceeds.

To have your chart available for the first class, please register by April 20 and follow the instructions in your registration confirmation.

Students should have a notebook and pen available for each class. The book Sun Signs by Linda Goodman is recommended but not required.

Week One: The Signs of the Zodiac

  • The tropical zodiac: the Sun’s ecliptic and the Earth’s 24-hour rotation
  • The components of the horoscope wheel
  • The astrological signs: symbols and meaning
  • The elements and qualities of the astrological signs

Week Two: The Houses

  • Angular house cusps (symbols) and the succedent and cadent houses
  • The meaning of the 12 houses of the zodiac
  • The meaning of the four quadrants of the wheel
  • Intercepted signs, houses, and planets

Week Three: The Planets

  • From the Sun to Pluto: symbols and meaning
  • Benefic vs. malefic planets
  • Retrograde planets: symbols and meaning
  • The “balloon principle” of the outer planets

Week Four: The Aspects

  • Orbs: angles of separation
  • Major vs. minor aspects: symbols and meaning
  • Hard vs. soft aspects
  • Approaching vs. separating aspects

Dave GunningDave Gunning has been an astrological consultant, teacher, and lecturer for the past 42 years. He has also written articles for Dell Horoscope magazine. For more than 13 years, he has been lecturing and teaching astrology through the monthly Stargazing astrology group at the Theosophical Society in Wheaton. His consultations come from a spiritual and psychological point of view.
