The artworks of the Russian thinker, artist, explorer, and writer Nicholas Roerich are well known around the world. His distinctive, immediately recognizable style is widely admired, yet his life and theosophical journey, shared with his wife Helena Roerich—also a writer and philosopher—remain less familiar even to many admirers.
This talk offers a brief overview of their lives and achievements through the lens of their theosophical path, with particular attention to their American and Indian periods, their connection to the Theosophical Society, and the teaching of “Agni Yoga,” or “Living Ethics,” transmitted through them.
Alex Audziayuk is currently Assistant Archivist and Rare Books Curator at the Theosophical Society in America in Wheaton, Illinois. Born and raised in Eastern Europe, he was exposed to Eastern Christianity from an early age. At 14, a Nicholas Roerich art exhibition introduced him to theosophy, leaving a lasting impression and inspiring his lifelong search for truth. This journey first led him back to the Orthodox Christian tradition and later to an Eastern Catholic monastery, where he spent several years as a monk. He later earned a Master of Divinity in Eastern Christian Theology and was ordained, serving in the church for over a decade. Ultimately, his theosophical quest for knowledge and meaning led him to pursue a career in Library and Information Science, culminating in his current role at the Theosophical Society in America and bringing together his spiritual and intellectual pursuits.
