The Myth of Er at the close of Plato’s Republic recounts the story of a soldier who is wounded on the battlefield and journeys to the afterlife, where he witnesses souls choosing their future incarnations. Many rush forward impulsively and make unwise choices, while a calm few choose wisely.
This allegory echoes Theosophical teachings on the great laws governing rebirth, which propose not only that future incarnations are chosen, but that their circumstances may also be shaped. Questions of how much lies within human control, and what it truly means to choose wisely, emerge from this account.
Drawing on the Myth of Er, this talk examines key lessons on reincarnation and considers how conscious preparation may influence the conditions of a future rebirth.
