Out-of-Body Experiences: A Convergence of Psychology, Spirituality, and Neuroscience

with Marina Weiler, Ph.D.

Marina weilerThis presentation will explore out-of-body experiences (OBEs) through an interdisciplinary lens, bridging psychology, spirituality, and neuroscience. Dr. Weiler will examine the phenomenology of OBEs, their psychological impact, and recent advances in neuroimaging and experimental research that provide new insights into the brain mechanisms.

By integrating scientific findings with personal accounts, this talk highlights OBEs as a powerful case study for understanding the mind–body relationship and the nature of human consciousness.

Marina Weiler, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist specializing in neuroimaging and cognitive neuroscience. During her Ph.D. at the University of Campinas, she researched MRI biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease. In 2016, she moved to the U.S. to work at the National Institute on Aging, part of the National Institutes of Health, where she focused on noninvasive brain stimulation to address age-related memory decline. Later, at the University of California, Los Angeles, Dr. Weiler investigated MRI biomarkers related to epilepsy following brain trauma. In 2023, she became an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies, where her research centers on extraordinary human experiences such as out-of-body experiences.
